Donation Doubles Size Of Wild Animal Sanctuary

KEENESBURG, Colo. (AP) - A wildlife sanctuary says a 400-acre donation has doubled the size of its facility in northeastern Colorado, placing it among the largest free-roaming carnivore sanctuaries in the Western Hemisphere.

The Wild Animal Sanctuary said Monday the $1 million deal was made possible by a supporter of the sanctuary's program that rescues lions, tigers, bears and wolves from illegal ownership or abusive environments.

Sanctuary director Pat Craig said the additional acreage helps them provide more freedom and a better quality of life for the rescued animals. Craig said the sanctuary will be able to expand the elevated catwalks and observation decks that crisscross the sanctuary.

The sanctuary took in 25 rescued Bolivian lions in February. It is home to about 270 wild animals.
