AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) – The Air Force Academy is formally dedicating its 6-megawatt solar array on the school’s grounds outside Colorado Springs.
Colorado Springs Utilities and SunPower Corp. will be represented at the dedication ceremony on Monday.
The photovoltaic array covers 30 acres and cost $18.3 million. It was funded by federal economic stimulus money.
Colorado Springs Utilities contracted with SunPower to design, build, operate and maintain the array. The academy will get the benefits of the power at no cost for the life of the array.
The array began generating power in March. Construction is expected to finish this month.
SunPower is based in San Jose, Calif.
