Prosecutors Ask For More Time In Cocaine Case
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - The U.S. Attorney's Office is asking more time to prepare the federal case against six Aspen-area residents who were arrested last month on drug charges.
U.S. Attorney Michele R. Korver asked a judge to waive the defendants' rights to a speedy trial because of unusually large amounts of evidence in the case.
The indictment charging a multi-state drug conspiracy followed a yearlong investigation involving court-authorized wiretaps on four telephones over five months.
The Aspen Times said there are an estimated 1,440 call records, of which some 380 calls believed to involve criminal activity. Many of the intercepted conversations are in Spanish and will have to be translated.
Federal authorities accused them of distributing more than five kilograms of cocaine in the Aspen area over the past year.
