Horse Quarantine Lifted In Canon City Park, Rodeo

CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) -- A potentially fatal horse virus quarantine that has shutdown rodeos and horse shows across the country has been lifted at rodeo grounds in one southern Colorado county.

The Daily Record reported Friday that Fremont County officials lifted the equine herpes virus EHV-1 quarantine at the Pathfinder Park arena and Canon City Rodeo Grounds after the county received a low risk assessment. Quarantine and hold orders remain in Bent, Boulder, Garfield, Gunnison, Larimer, Mesa, Morgan and Weld counties.

State agriculture officials say there are nine confirmed cases in horses in Colorado, with an additional 22 suspected cases. Two horses have been euthanized after showing severe neurological systems associated with the disease.

The disease is highly contagious for horses and can be transmitted through touch or air.

Humans are not at risk.
