Denver Mayoral Candidates Busy Stumping For Votes

DENVER (CBS4) - According to the latest poll by the Denver Post, Michael Hancock is leading opponent Chris Romer in the Denver mayoral race.

With only nine days left until the mayoral election, the candidates have been busy. Hancock started the day by talking to congregants at Saint Ignatius Loyola Church.

"The campaign is doing real well. The real challenge is to keep everyone focused and moving forward," Hancock said.

Romer stopped to visit worshippers at Saint John Episcopal Church.

"To speak to groups that will spread the word as to the differences between myself and Michael Hancock," Romer said. "I think that's working very well."

The poll shows Hancock leading Romer by 10 points. The automated telephone poll of 548 likely or actual Denver voters was conducted last week.

"It's great to hear people support you from the telephone, but until you get those ballots in, we're still on pins and needles," Hancock said.

The poll shows Hancock more popular with men and women, voters ages 18 to 64, and he leads among whites, blacks and Hispanics.

"I think in general we think we're a couple points behind Michael Hancock, but that's exactly where I thought I would be," Romer said.

The last days of their campaigns will be focused on talking with the community, getting them to vote, and not worrying too much about polls.

"Until we get those ballots in, that's the only real poll that matters to us," Hancock said.

"I knew I would execute a come-from-behind victory," Romer said. "He's now the front runner and I'm the underdog, and that's exactly the way I want it."

It's the first mayoral election to feature only mail-in-ballots. So far more than 20,000 people have returned their ballots. Election Day is Tuesday, June 7.
