DENVER (CBS4) – The coach of the University of Denver’s surprising Pioneers lacrosse team says his team has been fearless this year in their quest for an NCAA championship.
Bill Tierney told CBS4′s Vic Lombardi his team has been overlooked throughout the season, “and our mantra has been ‘Why not us?’”
In his second year with the Pioneers, Tierney has got his team in the NCAA’s Final Four after a win on Saturday over Johns Hopkins. No team west of the Mississippi has made it this far in the Division I tournament.
“My secret with kids is discipline. I think kids are searching for discipline nowadays and with that comes the coach’s need and his ability to adjust to whatever your talent is,” Tierney told Lombardi.
Watch Tierney’s complete interview with CBS4 below. He shares his perspective on the three other teams who are in the Final Four (Duke, Maryland and Virginia), plus describes what it was like having his son Trevor be a lacrosse goalie growing up (Trevor is now his defensive coordinator at DU).
The Pioneers play Virginia in Baltimore on Saturday afternoon.
