Suspect At Large After Hit-And-Run Involving Man In Wheelchair

DENVER (CBS4) - A man in a wheelchair was hit by a car on Saturday afternoon in Denver and the driver drove off.

Sherry Gonzales told CBS4 her husband Edward, 63, was struck on Alameda near Knox Court in the southwest part of the city. He was knocked out of his wheelchair but not seriously hurt.

"She physically, literally ran us over," said Gonzales.

Gonzales said the driver was a female and she was Hispanic.

"She backed up, went that way, that way, and went eastbound on Alameda as fast as a ... I don't know what," she told CBS4.

The driver apparently was in her mid-30s and driving a blue or green Jeep Cherokee. Denver police said they are looking for anyone who has more information about the incident to call them.

"We're having a lot more hit and run accidents. We're also having a lot of auto-pedestrian accident and the injuries have been severe," said Denver Police Lt. Matt Murray. "There are people who feel they'll get away with it. And they panic and they're afraid, but that's not an excuse."
