Search And Rescue Dogs Training In Colorado

DENVER (CBS4)- Search and rescue dogs from across the country are in Colorado this weekend to sharpen their skills.

Task Force One of the Colorado Urban Search and Rescue Team is hosting a national training exercise for disaster dogs.

The dogs are trained to find people trapped under the rubble.

Most of the handlers are volunteers who spend countless hours training their dogs to save lives.

“It’s important for our K-9 team to keep their skills fresh and ready to go at any time. You never know when a disaster is going to strike and the K-9 team is crucial to the success of our team,” said Colorado Urban Search & Rescue Task Force One spokeswoman Michelle French.

The training is happening at a site at Denver International Airport that features several rubble piles. It helps the dogs know what to expect if they are ever called out to a disaster.
