Sterling Ranch Plan In Douglas County Approved

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4)- A controversial plan to build more than 12,000 homes in northwest Douglas County has been given the green light. It's called Sterling Ranch and the project was unanimously approved by Douglas County Board of County Commissioners at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The decision comes after weeks of public hearings. Residents of Chatfield Basin had opposed Sterling Ranch, claiming such a large development would destroy their rural lifestyle.

Commissioners sided with the development, claiming the $4.4 billion project met all their requirements.

Construction of Sterling Ranch is expected to create thousands of jobs and generate an economic impact of $425 million annually.

Sterling Ranch is expected to begin building infrastructure in 2012. Construction of the first village is planned for 2013.

Sterling Ranch has vowed to build Colorado's most water-efficient community.
