Masters' Investigator May Face Reinstated Charges
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - A Fort Collins police detective accused of lying in a murder trial remains on paid administrative leave even though a judge has thrown out an indictment against him.
Lt. Jim Broderick was charged with seven counts of perjury that he allegedly lied in the 1999 murder conviction of Timothy Masters. Masters was released from prison in 2008 after DNA evidence lead to his conviction to be overturned.
A judge dismissed the indictment against Broderick on Monday, ruling that prosecutors failed to identify when they learned of the alleged perjury.
The city's interim police chief told the Fort Collins Coloradoan that the ruling caught police off guard and the department is trying to figure out what to do next.
Weld County district attorney Ken Buck is considering pursuing another indictment.
