Greeley Gets OK To Resume Work Where Herons Nested

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Federal wildlife officials say Greeley can resume construction work along the banks of the Cache la Poudre River where great blue herons were nesting before the heavy equipment rolled in.

Two weeks ago, work on an irrigation canal was halted after about 30 birds that had been nesting in trees took off. Federal wildlife officials wanted to check to see if the construction work caused the birds to abandon active nests, which could be a violation of migratory bird protection laws.

The Greeley Tribune reports that the city got the OK Tuesday to resume work even though city officials say they still waiting to hear if any eggs were left behind.
