Frank Bingham Donates Sculpture To Denver In Memory Of Family
DENVER (CBS4) - A new kinetic sculpture has gone up in Denver's Skyline Park. The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) made the announcement last Wednesday.
The sculpture, by artist Robert Pietruszewski, is called "Connections." It was installed in the park at the corner of 15th Street and Arapahoe Street.
The sculpture is made entirely of titanium and was donated to the city of Denver by Frank Bingham in memory of his wife, Rebecca, and two children, Macie and Garrison, who were tragically killed at the intersection in November of 2006.
"Several years in the making, the project was initially explored by Mr. Bingham and former Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. With generous donations from friends and family, as well as continuing support from local businessman Lanny Martin, Mr. Bingham has been able to see this project to completion," The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs said in a statement.
"I love the city of Denver, but that intersection has represented a dark place for me ever since that night," Bingham said. "This sculpture will enable a transformation of that area for me personally. The kinetic nature of the sculpture represents life and hope, and the title 'Connections' will remind everyone of the vital interconnectedness we all share in our community and the importance to community and a place of healing."
Pietruszewski, a Denver-based artist, has worked on a number of site-specific outdoor kinetic sculptures constructed of titanium, anodized aluminum and stainless steel. He's member of the International Sculpture Center.
