Arvada Police Search For Suspects In Mail Theft Ring


ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Arvada are searching for suspects in a mail theft ring that's responsible for the theft of at least $100,000.

Investigators believe at least two thieves are involved in the ring. The suspects steal personal checks from mailboxes then use those to computer generate many more fake checks.

"They are removing mail from mailboxes that are in front of our victims' homes. They're recreating those checks then using those checks to purchase goods and services," Susan Medina with Arvada police said.

The checks have been used at several Denver metro area businesses and post offices over the past several months.

"When you put it in the mailbox and put up the flag that's an open invitation to a would be thief," Medina said.

Investigators believe the suspects are connected to similar crimes in Wyoming, California, Utah and Mexico.

Police in Arvada are offering a $1,000 reward for information about the suspects.
