Pit Bulls Remain Banned In Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Seven dog breeds that are currently banned in Aurora will soon be allowed in the city again.

The Aurora City Council agreed Monday night to relax its breed-specific bans.

Pit bulls are still banned, but the city is working on allowing them as service dogs.

The vote on allowing the other breeds was 6-3. Two other breeds besides pit bulls also will remain banned.

The city was forced to take up the issue after changes were made with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The council also voted to allow any dog to be a service animal, including service dogs.

It is illegal to prohibit a disabled person from having the service dog of their choosing.

Dogs still banned after last night's vote are: the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Stafford-Shire Terrier and the Stafford-Shire Bull Terrier.

City councilman Bob Fitzgerald voted against the measure after an amendment he proposed failed. He wanted to make it so pit bulls as service dogs would have to prove they are in fact disabled -- something not allowed by federal law.

"What in fact the ADA does, it's well intentioned, but it says you don't have to prove you're disabled and you don't have to prove your service dog went through any training and I think it's ridiculous," Fitzgerald said.

Denver has so far said it won't change its stance on pit bulls.
