UNC ‘Significant Threat’ Warning Issued For Former Students

GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4)- The University of Northern Colorado has issued a warning to students about a former student who could represent a “significant threat.”

Eric Kinder is out of jail on work release. He pleaded guilty to felony menacing for a standoff with police in Greeley in Oct. 2010.

Kinder has been released from jail and is serving 12 years of probation. He is banned from the UNC campus and from owning guns. Police said Kinder had a substantial collection.

UNC has claimed Kinder confronted university members and admitted to writings of homicidal and suicidal thoughts.

Kinder reportedly complained in court on Tuesday that his life has been ruined because the school overreacted.

My brother attended University of northern Colorado for a doctrine degree. Last summer he was writing his synopsis for graduation. It was 2 pages long. He showed a classmate, and that classmate went to the dean’s office. The dean notifie…d the UNC police department and they banged on his door in the middle of the night to search him. (probably illegal). The police reported to the dean’s office and he was cleared and they found nothing unusual about my brother. Then UNC continued to harass him even after he was cleared. They then ordered my brother to see a psychologist once a week, in order for my brother to continue his education. At the time my brother did not know who complained on him, which is something anybody would have wanted to know. Yes, my brother was agitated, then UNC dropped him from his doctrine degree which really made him upset. My brother left and went back to his apartment. My brother was suicidal. Then UNC called SWAT and the Greeley police department and surrounded his home. My brother called several people that he had a gun to his head and he was going to kill himself because he was dropped from the program. During the negotiation between my brother and SWAT, my brother did say if anybody were to enter his apartment he would shoot.

Long story short, they arrested my brother and charged him with menacing. I have never heard of the word before, so I talked to a Sergeant and I asked him if my brother threatened any student, any employee, and any civilian. He said “no”. Therefore I asked him where was the menacing coming from? and he said towards the police department.

My brother did not go to UNC armed, and there was no need for SWAT to be called. My brother did not threaten anybody.

I called the police department stressing that he was depressed and does take anti-depressants, and that my brother needs treatment. They put him on suicide watch gave him a prescription for his depression but did not get him therapy. I begged them and so did my father.

After being incarcerated for some 6 months he was let go on a work release program. He was released on the 19th of this month and 5 days later he did exactly as I told the court system and the police department that he was suicidal, he tried to commit suicide and now was in critical condition on life support at the local hospital in Greeley .

I had told them that he needed Physiological help to deal with his depression that he has and now look where he is at.

While he was on life support at the hospital, and if he was going to survive this, I was begging the staff to have him evaluated for mental disorder by a licensed physiatrist. Which he was not! A licensed professional counselor evaluated him and then told the attending physician that my brother was fine. Go figure! I was also told that the attending physician can make the decision because during their course study they study briefly on mental health. That doctor doesn’t specialize in mental health. Then the attending physician released him. I begged them that for somebody to commit suicide twice in 6 months needs mental help. I am so amazed that he got another charge for trying to commit suicide. Every depressed person that tries to commit suicide beware you may be arrested. He is now in jail and is not receiving any therapy for his depression.

Also keep in mind while has was in jail the first time, he also didn’t receive any mental health help either. I also told the police department that he would try a kill himself again last fall and he tried. My brother needs help now.

Someone needs to be held accountable for their in-action of providing him with what he needed. Somebody accountable for their in-action of not taking the proper steps in giving my brother the medical treatment that they were aware that he needed. Please keep in mind all of this started because he showed his screenplay to a classmate. What happened to Freedom of Speech?

I forgot to mention that even his professors was trying to get the dean to change their mind about dropping my brother from school. They were instructed to keep quiet and the judge also said there probably was some miscommunication that led to the eventual police standoff.

There was a police standoff because he was trying to kill himself not anybody else. Also keep in mind unc sent out a notice to the students a day after he was arrested not while he was trying to commit suicide. If he was such a threat why did they wait until after the fact. They did it the next day to cover their butt’s. My brother is not getting any help with his depression.

I have known Eric for many years. ( although we’ve ever actually met face to face) , we used to chat on a regular basis on Yahoo.

Eric chatted to me one day about an idea he had for a movie and ran it past me – infact – he actually sent me a copy of the synopsis.

After reading it ….we got to chatting on the phone about it as I had questions regarding some of the ” ideas ” he had.

I think Eric was trying to convey a short and condensed version of a mini-drama based apon events within his life, and after having gone through it all I figured out where he was comming from…..The main thrust of his story is about a person that at an earlier point in his life had felt horribly guilty for some action that he took towards another person – that used to be a friend – and no matter how he tried to resolve this issue within himself ( the main character in his story Im refering to here ) ….never could.

Then there was the beatings that took place, and the fact that all his monsy while growing up had been given to the local church by the parents – leaving the family almost broke – and then having to accept “food packages ” care of the very same church ( which is ironic in itself ) simply added to the steress.

This brought Erics character in the film to the point where he became Athiest and renounced his religion and instead tried throughout his life to figure out if there was a god, why was he so cruel? – and also to find out why god had not helped him forgive himself for the act earlier in his life that haunted him bring such a deep guilt ( I believe Erics character at this point in the film wans to “connect” with the audience by reflecing a sense of hoplessness, – to the point where the character felt that even religion and ” god himself” had turned their back on him.

In the final scene of Erics movie the main character sets himself in a situation where he feels that the situation has become all too much – and then he raises the gun and from the last internal shot in the room looks like hes about to kill himself. – the thing here IS!…its left to the audience to figure that out for a couple of mins because there is an cut-away shot to outside the room and the sound of a gun going and a “flash” from within the room can be seen from the window.
      – followed by a “fade to black”.

Afert a few seconds…..there is a call to a friend overseas that comes from a minister or priest – these two arrange a meeting where the “friend” was told by the minister / priest that even though the ( character ) in Erics film DID infact kill himself ( at this point the audience finally has comformation ) – the minister tells his “friend from over seas ” that the main character ( eventhough he became athiest during the earlier part of his life – was ( on the quiet) trying to console himself and was seeing this minister / priest to help work through it – till it all got to much and self loathing and self guilt became too much of a burden and he too his life.

Now, ask yourself how do I know so much about Erics movie synopsis? because Eric asked me for help with the ending….( we ) were figuring out if we should just show a final gore -filled ending of the shot…or the external shot to increase the audience suspence……. oh! and the ” friend from overseas?…in the synopsis….thats based apon me! -IM the friend from overseas.

So let me tell you ALL a little something about Eric! – I KNOW this guy, and he a great bloke that has been steam-rollered ! there are a few little things about the “official” version that dont make sense….

1: If your actually planning to do something like a colombine kind of act – logic dictates the LAST thing you wouyld do would be to walk up to a friend at school and say. hey dude, I want you to see my plans! – simply put I personally believe that this person ( who Eric trusted as a friend mind you )..had another adjenda – and to make “brownie points ” ran to the dean to make a mountain out of a mole-hill ( possibly because they has an axe to grind over something OR they are real little cut-throats in getting ahead types.

2: Eric and I worked on this…( as I said I just milled over the advantages of the cut away shot vs the original ending …( and I live half way across the WORLD! ) so I KNOW that this is just a movie synopsis! – He gave me a COPY to read and ALSO wanted my opinion on it. – that being said this PROVES hes not a nut case! – he became deeply up-set because the person he showed his ” synopsis ” thought they could score some “milage” out of it and made poor Eric out ot be something hes NOT!

3: As I understand it…Eric had also had his funding cut and thus there was one place LESS that year…..(hmmm…seems llike a possible way to beat out the competition of you can make trouble for a grade A student as Eric was ) – but I only submise here…

4: lets look at the logic of this from another perspective – Eric was booted off campus for something that was he was accused of – which was later to be found to be totally in-correct. ( oh hes a mad man!, oh hes gonna hurt people! ) …nothng could be further from the truth!!

( but the over reaction by the university didnt help ). now matter WHAT he was accused of ( and even though he was cleard of it ) – he was STILL having fingers pointed at him…( not legally, but from a ” pssst! – see that guy ” kind of mentality. ( I know, Eric had told me about him being made to feel terrible because of this ” frind” that blew his movie synopsis out of proportion.

      So there Eric was……

1: Place cut out of University
2:having police come around to do a search of his home.
3: being treated like a looney by the some of the Facalty and his peers.

After the police initially came around – they found that nothing wrong, he was fine, he was just a litttle curious as to how this could all stem from a movie synopsis. – So he asked the police to take a copy of the synopsis and read it, and he went through it all with them…and even the FBI – they all agreed, Eric did nothing wrong it was a mis-communication between somone and the Dean.

I remember (in a phone call soon after the event ) Eric telling me how up-set he was that the University over reacted and said he had to go see a shrink over it…he ALSO told me that even the “shrink” understood it to all be a mistake.

I asked him what he was going to do about all this…and he said according to him – he asked the FBI was there any recourse because clearly he had not done anything wrong.and they told hime that Eric had infact had his rights abused? ( what I mean to say is that the Univesitty had done him wrong with the way they knee-jerk reacted to al lthis, ) and he had grounds to take legal action.

An interesting to note is that if a person is “locked up and out of the way ” that person can no-longer be in a position to start proceedings against a person or company or other thing.

MY opinion is that the University over-reacted and once everything checked out ok, – and Eric was told that his rights had been infringed apon and Eric could possibly seek damages….( well figure the rest out for yourself ).

In all…Eric Kinder is a great guy, that had his position taken through cuts at school, that when he tried to show creativity was accused of being a potential kiler – and when the smoke cleared, and it was PROVEN he did nothing wrong…and wanted to seek damages…he was conveniently shut-down.

Eric ( and I can understand this ) felt rejected, depressed, he possibly felt like all those years at Univesity and study had gone down the drain, and that everybody saw hime as some kind of “crazy” – when all he did was show some creative writing for a synopsis for a movie to a friend to share their reaction.
So he became so depressed, that he considered taking his own life – the police were caleld and he threatened to shoot ” HIMSELF” and NOT anybody else. – and for that, he gets hard-jail time……the poor guy has depression ( if YOU had your life go to bits in just over 24hrs) wouldnt you ?- but more importantly consider this….

With the laws over there the term “freedom of speech” or feeedom of “Creativity” seems to be gagged. – to me, it seems you people are living in almost a police state! ( seriously! )

Consiider this: could you think of what life would hav been like if they had locked up other writers of creative works like Dean Koonz or those that created other books, or horror movies, or murder mystery movies, ?

People would ALSO be arrested for writing a simple synopsis – their would be no books ( many of which became movies by the way ) like One flew over the cukoos nest, or ” IT” from Stephen king ( just to name a couple )…..and why would you write stuff thes days….( post 911 anyway )…see what can happen?…….you could be accused of being a mad killer – instead of a creative writer.

      -Enough said. were done here.
