Beer Battle Goes Flat On Final Attempt In Colorado

DENVER (AP) -- Colorado senators issued a last call for full-strength beer in convenience stores Tuesday when they rejected a measure allowing the brew.

The House has already voted down a broader bill ending Colorado's unusual practice of limiting alcohol content in beer and wine sold in convenience stores and supermarkets to 3.2 percent alcohol.

The fight over allowing so-called full-strength beer in gas stations has become a perennial fight in the Colorado Capitol. Democratic Sen. Betty Boyd shelved her proposal Tuesday after explaining that support dried up after a similar measure was defeated in the House.

The Senate did approve a separate bill reversing the prohibition so that 3.2 percent beer can be sold in bars and restaurants. Senate Bill 60 still needs one more Senate vote before going to the House.
