16-Year-Old From Hugo Charged With Murder Of Great Grandparents

HUGO, Colo. (CBS4) - Authorities in Lincoln County are charging the great-grandson of a couple who were killed this week with their murders.

It isn't clear if the 16-year-old will face charges as an adult or not in the case, and for that reason CBS4 is not reporting the boy's name. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department says the boy will face first degree murder charges.

He was taken into custody Friday after being released from the hospital. His name hasn't been released.

Deputies discovered the bodies of Charles Clagett, 80, and Laura Clagett, 82, on Wednesday at their home on County Road 29 in Hugo, near Limon. They had gone there to notify them about a crash involving the great grandson, who also lived there.

The coroner said the Clagetts both had gunshot wounds to the head and that it appears the person who killed them killed them did so while they were in their bedroom. They were apparently killed on Sunday or Monday.

That crash happened about four miles from the home. The teen was injured when his truck crashed and he was transported to a Denver-area hospital. Investigators found a large sum of cash in the truck and so far haven't said if they know who the money belongs to.

The teen grew up in Hugo and returned to live with his great-grandparents before starting school last fall.
