Toddler Found Wandering Alone On Denver Street
DENVER, Colo. (CBS4) - Denver police spent Thursday morning searching for parents of a 2-year-old child found alone and lost in the streets.
The child was found wandering alone in the dark at 28th and Williams streets, just outside Manual High School.
Police say at about 6 a.m. a man walking his dog spotted the little girl, called police and stayed with the toddler until she was in the care of the police department. Police determined she was not injured in any way.
Police then spent the morning going door-to-door looking for the toddler's parents. Finally an open front door alerted officers to the home where the child had been staying, off 29th Street.
The little girl wandered one block from that house where she was staying with a babysitter, or caretaker, overnight.
Police and social services are now investigating the case.
"We've got a lot of people to talk to -- the person where the child was residing, ... we have contact with mom so we can have a conversation with her. We need to figure out what's the home status, that's more of a social services issue," Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
Police say the district attorney's office in conjunction with social services will determine of any criminal charges apply in the case.
Police say this is a reminder for all parents and caretakers to take a second look at their residence. They say it's important to make sure the doors and windows are secure so a young child can't get out on their own.
