Civil Union Bill Killed In House Committee

DENVER (CBS4/AP)- A bill to allow civil unions for same-sex couples was killed in a House committee after hours of testimony Thursday night.

The committee includes Republicans from some of Colorado’s most conservative counties. Testimony on Senate Bill 172 was emotional on both sides. More than 100 people had signed up to testify either for or against the bill.

A GOP-led House committee voted Thursday to shelve the measure that would have made Colorado the eighth state in the country with civil union legislation or similar legal recognitions for gay couples. The bill died on a 6-5 party-line vote.

Supporters and opponents rallied at the state Capitol Thursday afternoon.

Gov. John Hickenlooper’s chief of staff read a message from Hickenlooper supporting the measure at the rally.

“Everyone, regardless of their sex orientation, should have the same legal rights,” said Hickenlooper’s Chief of Staff Roxanne White in a statement.

Couples in civil unions would have rights similar to married couples, including the ability to be involved in their partner’s medical decisions. The bill would also enhance inheritance rights and make it easier for couples to list each other as dependents on health insurance.

    Bigot. Ignorant bigot.

Gays already have the same rights. Want to be involved in your medical decisions, just let your Dr know and you will be! When I was married, my wife wasn’t totally involved in medical decisons about me and likewise I was not with hers. get real folks. Stop whining and educate yourselves. That’s all.

The turd burglar agenda is the extreme leftist agenda. They align themselves with the teachers unions, and other far left organizations.
They are denied no rights, thay can enter into contracts with partners on issues such as medical decisions life insurance, end of life wishes etc.
What thsy want is marriage sanctioned by the state, which is against Federal and natural law.

Oh — so beginning with a juvenile slur (on its way out with the SUCCEEDING anti-bullying bill) is supposed to give you some sort of credibility? Hmmm …

“Extreme leftist” would suggest TAKING RIGHTS AWAY from married couples, but I don’t think anyone wants that … wanting EQUAL rights is hardly extreme (unless you think the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are extreme)!

If they have to spend ONE PENNY more than the cost of a marriage license to cobble together a joke of an approximation of a civil union/marriage, it ain’t fair. Instantaneous and free to a married couple.

Exactly — it’s not even CLOSE to marriage due to the lack of over 1,100 FEDERAL rights, responsibilities, and protections … a fight for another day!

What is this “natural law” everyone keeps referring to? Where is it written down? If you’re referring to the Bible, it contains all SORTS of variations on “traditional” marriage …

Just goes to show how conservative and lowdown this State of Colorado really is towards those who are different than others

Justice will eventually prevail … it just keeps tripping over a bunch of narrow-minded people who feel a desperate need to hate SOMEBODY at all times!
