Mayoral Candidate Boigon Opposes 6.6 Percent Raise

DENVER (AP) - One of the people hoping to become Denver's next mayor is campaigning against pay raises for the office and other elected officials.

Councilwoman Carol Boigon launched a petition drive against the raises on Tuesday. Denver City Auditor Dennis Gallagher is also backing the effort.

The city council approved 6.6 percent raises earlier this month. The Denver Post says they'll be delayed for two years and then phased in starting with a 3.3 percent raise in July 2013.

The raises will go to the mayor, the auditor, the clerk and recorder as well as city council members.

Boigon and four other city council members opposed them. She says it's the not the right time for raises because the city is facing a $100 million budget deficit and people are struggling.
