Colorado Auto Group Aims To Get Clunkers Off The Road
DENVER (AP/CBS4) - The Colorado Automobile Dealers Association says it hopes to remove 1,000 high-polluting cars from roads this year through a program with car recyclers.
The association's Clear the Air Foundation is accepting old or poorly maintained cars from car dealers and the public that it would sell to recyclers. The car donors could get tax breaks.
The foundation's program coordinator Jill Unfried says the program could translate into new car sales.
In 2009, the federal Cash for Clunkers program encouraged people to trade in vehicles with poor gas mileage and use government rebates to buy new, fuel-efficient ones.
"The old high-emitters and these are cars that are 15, 20, 35 years old, are literally 100 times harder on air quality when it comes to ozone," Tim Jackson with the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association said.
An analysis by The Associated Press found the most common swap involved owners trading in old Ford F150 pickups for new Ford F150s with only marginally better gas mileage.
