Police Officer Hurt In Fatal Aurora Hostage Situation

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A man is dead and a woman and an Aurora police officer are in the hospital after a hostage situation in Aurora.

The incident happened late Monday night in the 14200 block of East 1st Drive.

Police said they believe the man was holding a woman and another person hostage inside a car outside a motel and at one point took them to an apartment complex nearby.

Officers approached vehicle near the apartments when they heard a gunshot. They say additional shots were then fired.

Police say the officer and the woman hurt were shot but will recover from their injuries.

The Aurora Police Department said officers did everything right.

"What the officers did was brave. They performed a hostage rescue and that's one of the most difficult things to do in our line of work. They knew what they were going up against. They decided to go forward and try to rescue these two hostages," said Aurora Police Det. Bob Friel.

The identity of the person who died so far has not been released.
