CSU Considers 20 Percent Tuition Increase

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Colorado State University is considering a 20 percent tuition increase for in-state undergraduate students this fall to help deal with a $23 million cut in state funding.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reported Saturday that layoffs are imminent. The number isn't yet known.

Academic units have been told to expect a 2 percent budget cut while non-academic units face a 5 percent cut.

CSU Provost Rick Miranda disclosed the tuition proposal in an e-mail to faculty and staff. He told the newspaper that deans and other departments head will identify the cuts in two weeks.

The CSU Board of Governors will have the final say on the tuition increase at a meeting in June.

Richard Eykholt, chairman of the Faculty Council, says layoff notices will probably start by April 1.
