Former Larimer GOP Chairman Ignored Fine Notices

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - The former chairman of the Larimer County Republican Party said he chose to ignore notices about unfiled campaign finance reports from the secretary of state.

The Coloradoan reported Tuesday that Larry Carillo, who resigned as chairman last week, said he didn't open five certified letters because he suspected the contents.

Other notices of delinquent campaign finances were sent to an unchecked post office box in Fort Collins.

The party has over $100,000 in fines for unfiled reports. Half is due to an accidental party created in April when the party treasurer checked the wrong box on a "committee registration form."

It's likely the accidental party fees will be waived. The party is hopeful the secretary of state will waive the remaining penalties.
