Molly Bloom Excels At Wells Fargo Cup

WINTER PARK, Colo. (CBS4) - Some of the nation's best disabled skiers were in Winter Park over the weekend taking part in the 36th annual Wells Fargo Cup to raise money for the National Sports Center for the Disabled.

One racer proved that losing a limb doesn't have to mean ending an active life. Molly Bloom survived a terrible accident on her prom night in 2006 in which she lost a leg. She was lucky to survive, but now she's exceeding everyone's expectations.

"I've never raced skiing even as an able-bodied person, so it's really fun to get back into a racing competition," said Bloom, who was a former competitive swimmer.

Today Bloom is more than healthy -- she's a star. She said she doesn't know where she would be without the National Sports Center for the Disabled.

"It's been really inspiring to get back into it, really just to get hooked into the community," she said.

On the slopes Bloom is truly awesome. She makes turns with grace and confidence. She said it's easy to get good with the help of the program.

"So many people out here at NSCD are gold medalists, so it's awesome to be surrounded by that greatness."

Doctors actually disagree -- they think she deserves more credit.

"Many times we recognize the patient's attitude. It makes a huge difference in the hospital and particularly in rehab," said Dr. Gene Moore, trauma surgeon with Denver Health. "She of course embodies that spirit."

Bloom will graduate college after this semester. She said she wants to race professionally in the Paralympics.
