Colorado Study Looks At Students' College Readiness

DENVER (AP) - A new study suggests Colorado students who need remedial education when they enter a Colorado college can be identified from achievement test results as early as sixth grade.

The study was released by the Colorado departments of education and higher education this week.

The analysis looked at 17,500 students who graduated from Colorado high schools in the spring of 2009 and then entered a Colorado postsecondary institution that fall.

It says a combination of results from the ACT and 10th grade CSAP, or Colorado Student Assessment Program, clearly identified most of the students who needed work in basic skills in their first year of college to bring them up to college level. But it says state assessment results from sixth-grade were also a good indicator.
