Several Hurt When Tow Truck Crashes Into Bus Near Aspen

ASPEN, Colo. (CBS4)- More than 20 people were rushed to the hospital after tow truck crashed into the side of a bus they were riding in Friday morning. It happened on the road between Aspen and Snowmass Village at about 10 a.m.

Colorado State Troopers said the flatbed tow truck was traveling eastbound on Highway 82 when it entered the intersection at Brush Creek Road and ran a red light. The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority bus entered the intersection on a green light when it was struck.

53 passengers were on the bus when it was struck on the right side.

A total of 22 people were taken to hospitals, 13 taken to Aspen Valley Hospital, nine others taken to Snow Mass Village Medical Center. Seven others complained of minor injuries but were not taken to the hospital. Their injuries range from severe to minor, none of their injuries appear to be life-threatening.

A passenger in the tow truck also was injured and taken to the hospital.

The driver of the tow truck, Bailey Hall-Sansom, 21, was cited for careless driving causing bodily injury. Hall-Sansom was not hurt in the crash.

Pitkin County Sheriff's spokesman Alex Burchetta said authorities had gotten reports of snow stacking up in the hoods of traffic lights, obscuring the signals, in the area before the accident.
