Shoppers Can Soon Browse New IKEA In Centennial

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (CBS4) - Colorado shoppers will soon be able to browse a 415,000 square foot IKEA store in Centennial.

IKEA plans to open its second largest store in the nation this fall.

The store is currently being built on more than 13 acres just west of Interstate 25 and County Line Road. The shell is up and now crews are working on the inside.

The store will be the first IKEA store in the nation to be heated and cooled with a geothermal system. Solar panels on the roof will also provide the store with electricity.

The first IKEA store opened in Sweden in 1958. There are now more than 300 stores in 30 countries.

IKEA prides itself on offering anything and everything for the home, and at low prices.

"You'll enter the store and you'll go through a showroom of approximately 50 room settings. You'll be able to select the furniture, and then you'll go through our marketplace downstairs where you can buy home accessories such as cookware and textiles," store manager Kelly Frieze said. "Then you'll go into our self-serve warehouse where the furniture; you'll be able to pick it up yourself and take it home with you the same day."

When it's open the store will employ more than 400 people. The construction project has created about 500 jobs as well.
