OMAHA, Neb. (CBS4) – Rich Purslow tallied two goals and added an assist and John Faulkner made 27 saves as No. 12 Nebraska Omaha beat No. 6 Denver, 5-2, in WCHA Friday night.

Luke Salazar and Drew Shore scored for Denver. Johnnie Searfoss, Andrej Sustr and Matt White added goals for Nebraska Omaha.

The Pioneers went 0-for-5 on the power play and surrendered two shorthanded goals in the loss. DU has given up four shorthanded goals in its last three games and allowed the first goal in its last eight games.

“Our power-play execution was disappointing,” DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. “We did some good things tonight, but Nebraska Omaha is a pretty darn good team and they played pretty well.”

Nebraska Omaha scored first when Purslow chipped in a pass from Joey Martin on a 2-on-1 rush for a shorthanded goal at 5:42 of the first period. Adam Murray kept the score 1-0 with 13 saves in the opening period.

Salazar netted a Matt Donovan feed at 6:31 of the second stanza, but UNO regained the lead on a Searfoss tally 29 seconds later.

Drew Shore buried a Zucker centering feed at 5:37 of the third period to tie the score at 2-2. Sustr re-directed an Purslow shot at 7:56 put the Mavericks up 3-2.

White’s unassisted shorthanded goal at 11:50 gave the Mavericks a 4-2 lead and Purslow’s empty-net tally at 19:59 iced the 5-2 win.

Nebraska Omaha outshot DU, 32-29, and went 0-for-2 on the power play.
