Woman Airlifted After Ice Sailing Accident

LITTLETON, Colo. (CBS4) - A woman had to be airlifted to the hospital after hitting her head while ice sailing Sunday morning on Chatfield Reservoir.

Ice sailing has become an increasingly popular sport at Chatfield Reservoir.

The 53-year-old woman had been gliding across the ice on a board mounted on blades with a windsurfing sail. She struck a hole carved out by an ice fisherman and fell, hitting her head.

"It is very important to wear proper protective equipment and she was. She was wearing a helmet elbow pads and knee pads. It certainly could have been a lot worse," Park Ranger Ben Vinci said.

The woman had been sailing with three other people who called for help.

A helicopter flew her to Swedish Medical Center. Her friends said she had a minor concussion and is expected to recover.
