Bennet On Mission To Increase Interest In Teaching

DENVER (CBS4)- U.S. Senator Michael Bennet from Colorado is on a mission to get more people interested in teaching.

The Democrat is the former Denver Public Schools Superintendent. He visited the Montclair Elementary School and met with some young educators.

Bennet highlighted the district's first-in-the-nation teacher residency program.

The program is designed to recruit, train and support aspiring teachers by letting them work alongside another teacher who serves as a mentor.

"We wanted to make sure we had multiple pathways into teaching and into the school district for people who were interested in supporting our kids. We're going to be facing a shortage of more than a million teachers in this country in the next ten years," said Bennet.

Bennet is also supporting The Presidential Teacher Corps in Washington. President Obama put the idea in his budget. It calls for $185 million in spending to recruit and train teachers.
