Snow Makes For Slow Travel In High Country

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- After several days of warm and sunny weather, the mountains received another dose of winter on Thursday.

The roads on Interstate 70 were snow packed with chains laws in effect on both approaches to the Eisenhower Tunnel. Thursday afternoon, the chain law for I-70 Vail Pass was lifted. The chain laws were downgraded for eastbound lanes from Silverthorne to the tunnel as well as Loveland Pass.

Colorado Department of Transportation plow crews worked all morning to clear the roads. As a result, they had to push snow onto the side of the road. That made the commute tough for some truckers.

CBS4 met a trucker who had chains on his tires, but still wasn't able to get himself out once he was stuck in the snow along I-70.

"It looks like it's packed in real good right here and it's like straight ice under here," he said as he worked to free his truck from the snow.

As of Thursday afternoon, avalanche conditions were listed as moderate to considerable.
