COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) – Police in Colorado Springs have safely exploded a live grenade that was found in a park.
Sgt. Steve Noblitt says a city parks and recreation employee spotted the modified military-style hand grenade wrapped in duct tape Monday on the east shore of Prospect Lake at Memorial Park.
Noblitt says the grenade was not near a playground but was out in the open. He says, “It was right in an area where people could’ve been.”
He wouldn’t disclose how the grenade was modified.
Bomb technicians determined the device could have hurt people within about 15 feet if it had detonated.
Noblitt says technicians are reconstructing the device and looking for fingerprints to try to determine who modified it and put it in the park.
