Hit & Run Suspect Appears In Denver Court

DENVER (CBS4) - The woman accused in a deadly hit-and-run crash is back in Colorado. Norma Vera-Nolasco made her first appearance in court Thursday morning.

Vera-Nolasco returned from Phoenix Wednesday night. She was arrested there two weeks ago minutes before her flight was about to take off for Mexico.

She's suspected of being the driver of the pick-up that hit and killed 21-year-old valet Jose Medina outside a Denver nightclub last month.

Medina's mother and fiancée were in court. His mother wore a t-shirt that read, forever missed.

When Vera-Nolasco appeared in front of them, the women were crying and shaking. Vera-Nolasco's bond is set at $200,000.

"There's no amount of bond, there should be no bond is what the family's position is. However, we are confident she won't post," Gabriel Schwarts the Medina family attorney said.

If Vera-Nolasco posts bond, she will be required to wear a GPS ankle bracelet that also detects alcohol use. She can't drink alcohol or drive for any reason if she posts bond.

Vera-Nolasco would also be required to check in with the court two times a week.

Three other people associated with Vera-Nolasco are facing felony charges.

A spokesperson for the Denver D.A.'s office said each of the other suspects either destroyed evidence in the case, hid Vera-Nolasco's truck or tried to help her leave the country.

Eliu Montes-Garcia, 18, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, vehicular homicide, and two counts of accessory to crime.

Yolanda Bastida-Nolasco, 43, has been charged with two counts of accessory to crime and criminal impersonation.

Guadalupe Bastida, 48, has been charged with two counts of accessory to crime.

Authorities said all four were in the U.S. illegally.
