CU-Boulder Faculty Questions Students' Game Garb
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Some faculty members are concerned about University of Colorado-Boulder students painting their faces and bodies black at games and are writing a resolution urging the practice be addressed.
The Boulder Faculty Assembly's diversity committee says that "blackface" costumes have been displayed at sports events many times. The Daily Camera reports that the Boulder Faculty assembly is expected to discuss the committee's resolution next month.
Students who've worn black body paint to football games say they're just showing school spirit and supporting the Buffaloes, whose colors are black and gold. Junior Chris Scully says he and friends painted their faces and bodies black and wore blue and pink wigs to a football game.
Blackface was common in minstrel shows in the 19th century and featured white performers playing stereotyped black characters.
