Metro State Considers A Name Change

DENVER, Colo. (CBS4) - Metropolitan State College of Denver announced Thursday that they are considering changing the name of their institution. Proposed names include Metropolitan State University of Denver, University of Central Colorado and Denver State University.

School president Stephen Jordan said the college is evaluating the merits of making the transition. An assessment found the current name creates confusion for some people who aren't sure whether the college is a four-year institution or a community college. The assessment also found that the current name might not be as helpful as it could be in summarizing what the school has to offer.

"The trustees see the value and benefits that could accrue to students and alumni, were the college to vote to change its name to something that would increase its stature within the community," Trustee Chairman Rob Cohen said in a prepared statement.

The college will host a town hall meeting to discuss the possible name change next week and they will be staging focus groups throughout the month.

College officials said a poll conducted during the fall semester found most students are in favor of a name change.

Kathryn Cammack, another trustee, said she think the change is "long overdue" and comes at a good time considering the college's recent addition of graduate programs.

The town hall meeting will take place on Feb. 9 at 7:30 a.m. at the Tivoli Turnhalle on the college's downtown Denver campus.
