Snow Day: Rec Center In Stapleton Packed With Kids

DENVER (CBS4) - With all the schools closed because of the weather CBS4's Kathy Walsh decided to head out on Tuesday to find out how parents and children coped.

Parents know a recreation center pool is always a good option for tiring out the kiddos, and the one at the brand new Central Park Recreation Center at Stapleton was the place to be for children while the schools were closed.

"Lazy River" at the rec center is a sea of noodles and tubes and way too much fun. It's a tropical escape from the day's bitter cold.

"We were going to stay inside and watch movies then I had heard this had opened and I thought, 'What a great idea,'" a parent told Walsh.

But it wasn't a novel one. Fifteen minutes from the time the rec center pool opened it was filled to capacity. The family lounge was a holding area with envious kids anxious to make their own splash.

"We have to wait until people come out so we can come in," a young-one said.

It was like trying to get a table at a trendy restaurant.

"We're calling party of Smith every time somebody leaves out of the pool area; a family leaves we'll call in another family," Kelly Kitts with the rec center said. "So, we're in an in-and-out policy right now."

Patience paid off as kids said the wait was worth it. Moms and dads would agree -- they had happy, waterlogged kids and some even got a chance to read or socialize.
