Security Cameras Shine On Mother Cabrini Shrine

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4)-- In November, vandals destroyed four statues at the Mother Cabrini Shrine. The Shrine's caretakers want to make sure that never happens again.

Donations have poured in from all over the world to repair and replace those destroyed statues.

Security cameras have been installed on the grounds in hopes of deterring vandals from striking again.

"Now we have to put in the technological equipment that makes it far more safer. This is sad, this is sad," said Sister Patricia Dunleavy.

Ten cameras are being installed in the chapel, grotto, gift shop and near the Sacred Heart Statue at the top of the stairs. The cameras will record around the clock, so Cabrini staff will be alerted if something sets off the security system.

"If we do see somebody that's here after hours we will get notified via e-mail or text message. We can go to a website to check," said Jeff Lewis, with the Mother Cabrini Shrine.

Donations of money and equipment made the new security system possible.

The Shrine received about $19,000 in donations to repair the damage. That doesn't include time and services donated by patrons to restore the sacred place to its glory.
