Athletes And Concussions Target Of Colo. Proposal

DENVER (AP) -- Colorado is among at least a half-dozen states considering measures to try to protect young athletes from head injuries.

The bill by two suburban Denver senators would require coaches at schools and private sports clubs to take annual training in how to identify concussions. The measure would also require coaches to immediately remove students from games and practices if the students show signs of having a concussion.

Schools and coaches would also be protected from lawsuits over students who get concussions while playing sports.

At least a dozen states have similar concussion laws, prompted by concerns over sports and head injuries, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
