Roxborough School Becomes Newest Fit 4 Colorado Winner

LITTLETON, Colo (CBS4) CBS4 Meteorologist Jennifer Zeppelin names Roxborough Primary & Intermediate as the Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge winner for January 2011. Zeppelin made the announcement at a school assembly.

"I think this is fantastic," said Rick Kendall, principal of the school.

Roxborough Primary & Intermediate has made health and fitness a central part of their school environment. Students have access to pedometers to count steps, teachers allow "Brain Breaks" during the day which encourages students to move during class, and the school hosts a family field day. Cafeteria workers have also made healthy changes in the lunch room. Meals are made with fresh not frozen foods, they're prepared from scratch and are lower in sodium and fat. Students and staff can also participate in kickball, yoga, golf, and a duathalon.

As part of the Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge award, CBS4 and HealthOne's Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children presented the school with a $1,000 check. Kendall says the school will use the money to pay for CSAP snacks.

"We think it's important to give kids a healthy start to the day when they start those assessments," Kendall told CBS4.
