Hickenlooper To Lead National Education Group

DENVER (AP) - Colorado Gov.-elect John Hickenlooper will take over an influential national education group after he's inaugurated next week.

The Democrat is taking charge of the Education Commission of the States. He'll replace Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a Republican. The party of the commission's chairperson shifts every two years.

The Denver-based group was created as a nonprofit in 1965 to spur policy discussion and the exchange of education ideas among political and school leaders.

Hickenlooper, the mayor of Denver, will be sworn in as governor on Jan. 11.

His term at the education commission will end in 2013.
