Man Loses Leg In Hit & Run, Police Search For Suspect

DENVER (CBS4) - Police are asking for the public's help tracking down the driver who hit a man on Pena Boulevard and kept going.

The hit-and-run happened nearly two weeks ago on Pena Boulevard near Chamers Road. Keino Taylor lost part of his leg as a result of the crash. Taylor was helping a friend when it happened.

Taylor, a father of four, got out of his car to help that friend whose SUV had broken down when another car plowed into him and drove away. Now his family is asking for your help in finding the driver.

"We are not mad at all. We have prayed for you and you are continually in our prayers. We're just asking that you do the honorable thing," said Darnell Ward, Taylor's brother.

Ward says a strong constitution and a tight-knit family have helped his brother beat the odds -- both in terms of forgiveness and attitude.

"He's been the same vibrant person that he's been in his 39 years of existence," Ward said.

Since the night of Dec. 16 when his left leg was crushed, Taylor has endured four surgeries and unbearable pain. Sparing his leg would have meant many more surgeries, which Taylor decided against.

"His decision was to do the amputation to get back to his life and regular duties that he had," surgeon Dr. Kagan Ozer said.

Doctors were able to save Taylor's knee joint and they'll use skin from his foot to cover the stump.

Ward says his brother isn't daunted by the prospect of life as an amputee.

"I know, obviously it's going to be a long road. But it's something that he definitely can get past and get through," he said.

Police say the hit-and-run vehicle is an older model, blue or green Honda Accord or Civic. It would be missing its passenger side mirror and would have extensive damage to the right front bumper.

Anyone with information should call police.

Taylor should be released from the hospital in about a week. He'll likely be fitted for prosthesis next month.
