ASPEN, Colo. (AP) – A Carbondale man has been sentenced to probation and community service for stealing painkillers from monks at an Old Snowmass monastery.

The Aspen Times reports that 23-year-old Daniel Kramer received a one-year deferred judgment, which means the felony conviction of possession of a controlled substance will be wiped from his record if he doesn’t commit any crimes during that period.

Pitkin County District Judge Gail Nichols told Kramer Monday that stealing from people who live in a monastery is shocking.

Authorities say one of Kramer’s thefts was caught on surveillance video when he entered a bedroom at the monastery during Mass and took a prescription bottle. Kramer was a member of the congregation.

The judge noted that Kramer had entered drug treatment.
