Baby Dies After Hit & Run In Stapleton

DENVER (CBS4)- Tragic news came Friday morning following Thursday's so-far unsolved hit-and-run incident in Denver's Stapleton neighborhood.

A pregnant woman was struck and critically hurt by a driver of an SUV while she was walking across a crosswalk. The incident happened near the intersection of Central Park Boulevard and E. 29th Avenue.

The woman, who was in the 34th week of her pregnancy, was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center where the doctors had to perform an emergency delivery of the child. On Friday police told CBS4 the baby had died.

On Friday morning the mother's condition was also described as critical and police said they were planning to hold a news conference to ask for the public's help with their investigation.

Police are now are searching for the driver of the dark-colored SUV. Officers said that person most likely went through two stop signs before hitting the victim while she was walking eastbound across Central Park Boulevard. The incident happened just after 5 p.m.

The suspect vehicle was described as a dark blue or black SUV or pickup truck. It was last seen traveling southbound on Central Park Boulevard.
