Fort Collins Police Shoot & Kill Escapee

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -Police in Fort Collins say a man wanted for escaping from community corrections is dead after being shot by police.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Police had gotten a tip that the unidentified man was at an apartment complex. They went to the complex to serve felony warrants to the fugitive.

Police spokeswoman Rita Davis said that when the officers made contact with the man, he made a threatening movement toward the officers and they fired at him.

"I saw the cops cops shooting. They were right in front of my apartment shooting shooting at the victim," said witness and neighbor Kristen Baker.

Baker said before the shooting, she heard police tell the man, at least 10 times, to take his hands out of his pockets.

"They asked him to show his hands multiple times. We can't see your hands, sir," said Baker.

Davis said he was shot multiple times and died at the hospital.

"When the officers made contact with the suspect, he made a threatening movement toward the officers and the officers fired their weapons," said Davis.

Police say the man was wanted for burglary and menacing, theft and eluding as well as escaping from community corrections.

Three officers have been placed on paid leave as police investigate what happened. Davis said their names are expected to be released Friday afternoon.

The coroner has not identified the man who was killed.
