Fort Collins Man An Inspiration For Weight Loss

This story was originally published in April 2009.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) Brian Walter has one pair of pants from the days when he was 342 pounds.

"I couldn't believe how big they were when I got them out this morning," Walter told CBS4.

At a svelte 185, the pants are twice Walter's current waistline. He says over the years his indulgent eating habits and sedentary lifestyle caught up with him. He put on the pounds over the course of 10 years. Then 4 years ago he decided he needed a change.

"It was just kind of a lot of little things. I was noticing that I really wasn't able to keep up with the guys on the softball field anymore," Walter explained.

He started walking every evening with his wife and he joined Weight Watchers.

"I went to Weight Watchers because I really had no idea what a normal portion … adequate portion size was."

Walking turned into running and combined with the healthier diet, Walter was able to take off 157 pounds.

"When I first started doing this I used to think of myself as an overweight guy or a guy losing weight that does the kinds of things that fit people do. Somewhere along the way I changed and started to think of myself as a fit guy."

Now Walter is training for a marathon. He has an eye to the finish line, but knows that there is no end to a healthy lifestyle.
